WebX 2026: When AI Crosses Blockchain — Redefining the Next Value Infrastructure

At WebX 2026, AI-blockchain convergence, financial-infrastructure openness and data trust point to a trusted, deterministic, governable foundation for value.

On July 13–14, 2026, WebX 2026 — Asia’s largest-scale Web3 conference — was held in Tokyo. Invited by a partner, Hyperchain attended the event, and what stood out above all was how this year’s agenda pushed several threads that had long run in parallel — artificial intelligence, blockchain infrastructure, financial markets, and regulatory governance — onto the same axis of discussion. Looking across the whole conference, the most conspicuous change is that the center of gravity has moved away from “what blockchain can do” toward “how blockchain can provide a trusted and deterministic foundation for the AI era.”

The Intersection of AI and Blockchain: From Narrative to Infrastructure

At this WebX, the density of AI-related sessions was markedly higher than in previous years. From the “AI agent economy” to autonomous payment between AI agents, and on to the question of who should govern AI agents, the discussions spanned almost every layer of the intersection between AI and on-chain systems. Notably, one concept that was rarely heard before appeared repeatedly on the agenda — KYA, short for “Know Your Agent.” It points to a key problem: when AI agents begin to execute transactions and dispose of assets on behalf of users, what people need is not more computing power, but a technical contract that can be verified, traced, and constrained.

This is precisely where blockchain can deliver deterministic value. AI excels at generating and handling uncertainty, while on-chain data structures excel at anchoring certainty — consensus rules, execution results, and transaction paths, once recorded on-chain, become tamper-proof, verifiable, and auditable. Combining AI’s capability with on-chain determinism can add a layer of accountability to the moment “AI makes decisions on our behalf,” and can ground collaboration between AI agents in verifiable trust. For such high-frequency, parallel interactions to run well, parallel processing and scalable execution become unavoidable underlying requirements.

Web3 Connecting with Financial Infrastructure: Institutions Step In

Compared with previous editions, another main thread at this WebX was the connectivity between Web3 and financial infrastructure. The conference dedicated a dedicated finance-seminar stage, where participants from exchanges, research institutions, and large enterprises discussed interoperability between DeFi and off-chain finance, the entry of payment protocols into large businesses, and the infrastructure for asset confirmation and circulation. It is clear that Web3 is moving from “a niche digital experiment” to “an object being seriously evaluated by mainstream financial institutions.”

This trend places clearer demands on the underlying technology. On one hand, different chains and different financial systems need to be genuinely interoperable rather than operating in isolation; on the other hand, institutional-grade applications need a technical framework that is both permissionless to access and customizable and governable at the same time. Beneath the AI and finance threads, two other clusters of topics recurred throughout the conference: data trust, and cybersecurity and governance in the age of AI and Web3. The practical discussions on “data trust in the AI and blockchain era” revealed a core consensus — data needs to be fully usable, yet remain controllable and trustworthy in its use, in other words, “data usable without being exposed.” At the same time, discussions on AI governance, cybersecurity, and rule-making provided a policy-level response.

For Hyperchain, this resonates with two positions it has long held. First, data sovereignty — letting the owner of data control its value and its boundaries. Second, the balance of “permissionless × customizable × governable” — finding a workable equilibrium between open access and compliant control. As AI further penetrates production and transactions, data trustworthiness and governance compliance will no longer be a “cost of compliance,” but a basic component of value infrastructure.

From this edition of WebX, it is clear that the industry is converging its attention from “concepts” to “infrastructure.” Whether it is the verifiability and accountability of AI, the interoperability between financial systems and on-chain systems, or data sovereignty and governance compliance, they all point to the same underlying need — a trusted, deterministic, and governable foundation for value.
