As blockchains have developed, one contradiction has become increasingly stark: there are more and more chains, yet value grows more and more fragmented.
On one side, public chains, industry chains, and consortium chains each grow on their own; every chain is like a relatively independent world with its own ledger, its own users, its own assets and business. On the other, real production collaboration is never confined to a single system — a company may at once connect to multiple supply chains, multiple institutions, multiple data domains. What it needs is not “another chain,” but for the chains that already exist to genuinely communicate, transfer, and collaborate with one another.
If chains cannot interconnect smoothly, then no matter how many there are, they remain so many isolated “islands” of mutually cut-off information and value. Cross-chain interoperability therefore becomes an unavoidable step in moving from “pilots” to “production.”
How the silos form
The technical root is not complicated: every chain has an independent ledger, an independent consensus, an independent asset definition and data store. States are maintained separately, with no natural “consensus” and thus no natural trusted transfer. For value to truly flow, what must be built between chains is a verifiable channel of mutual trust — not simply shoveling data from one place to another.
From protocols to an aggregation layer: two ways out
The paths the industry is exploring basically fall into two categories.
One is cross-chain protocols, which focus on point-to-point trust: build a channel for passing messages and assets between two chains, keep both ends consistent through cross-chain transactions, and let assets and business migrate safely between chains. Their value is to turn “cross-chain” itself into a trustworthy, verifiable foundational capability.
The other is the aggregation layer, which goes a step further: since there are so many chains, rather than making users shuffle back and forth, provide a unified gateway that aggregates the scattered networks, users, assets, and liquidity. Users experience it at a single entry point while the underlying chains are transparently scheduled. Its goal is for people to stop perceiving “which chain am I on” and only perceive “I got this done.”
These two paths are not opposed — protocols solve “can they connect,” and the aggregation layer solves “is the experience smooth once connected.” A mature multi-chain system usually has both.
Protocol-Agnostic: interconnection that is independent of the chain
Pushing further along the aggregation line of thought touches a more fundamental proposition: true interconnection should be independent of which specific chain is involved.
This is what is meant by Protocol-Agnostic. Its meaning: an interoperability protocol should not bind itself to one particular chain or one particular data structure, but should sit “above the chains” and reconcile different systems with a common set of rules. In this way, whether the underlying layer is a public, industry, or consortium chain, as long as it follows the common convention, it can be brought into the same interoperability network.
Being chain-agnostic means far more than technical generality. It means any chain, any organization, can enter the network on equal footing, rather than being dominated by one party or one chain. The ecosystem is thus open and extensible, and value can flow across a far broader scope.

The ultimate question of cross-chain interoperability has never been “how big is a chain,” but “can value move freely.” From cross-chain protocols opening a channel, to an aggregation layer providing a unified gateway, to chain-agnostic protocols making interconnection genuinely universal — every step of this route pushes blockchain from one closed system after another toward an open, interconnected, verifiable whole.
Breaking the silos is the first step of blockchain toward the real world. And what can truly carry that goal is inevitably a foundational design that has native cross-chain capability and turns cross-chain into trusted infrastructure — which may be exactly why “chain-agnostic” deserved adherence from the very start.
